JEREMY MONTEIRO

A Guiding Star of Singapore Jazz

A towering figure in Singapore’s music landscape, Jeremy Monteiro has, for decades, been synonymous with the growth and global recognition of jazz in the region. Affectionately known as “Singapore’s King of Swing,” the Cultural Medallion recipient is more than a performer — he is a pioneer, mentor, and cultural force who has helped shape the very foundation of Singapore’s jazz identity.

His journey onto the international stage began in 1988, when he became the first Southeast Asian to lead a band of established global jazz musicians at the Montreux Jazz Festival, performing as Monteiro, Young & Holt and Friends. It was a defining moment — not just for his career, but for the region — marking Singapore’s arrival on one of the world’s most respected jazz platforms.

Since then, Jeremy Monteiro’s career has spanned continents and generations. As a pianist, his style is unmistakable: rooted in swing, rich in phrasing, and guided by a deep respect for the traditions of jazz, while remaining open to reinterpretation and evolution. His performances are marked by both technical mastery and a sense of joy — a reminder that jazz, at its core, is as much about feeling as it is about form.

Beyond the stage, his influence has been profound. As the Executive Director of the Jazz Association Singapore, he has played a central role in nurturing the next generation of musicians, creating platforms for young artists to learn, perform, and grow. Through initiatives such as the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) and JASS Youth Orchestra (JASSYO!), he has ensured that jazz in Singapore is not only preserved, but continuously reimagined.

His contributions have been recognised at the highest levels, culminating in the conferment of Singapore’s Cultural Medallion — the nation’s most prestigious arts award. Yet, despite the accolades, Jeremy Monteiro remains deeply committed to the craft itself: the music, the collaboration, and the community it fosters.

What defines him is not just longevity, but relevance. Decades into his career, he continues to perform, record, and create with the same energy and curiosity that first brought him to the global stage. Whether leading an orchestra, collaborating with international artists, or performing in an intimate setting, he brings with him a presence that is both commanding and generous — a true custodian of the art form.

At the JASS Benefit Gala, Jeremy Monteiro stands not only as a performer, but as a symbol of what the evening represents. His journey mirrors the story of Singapore jazz itself — one of passion, perseverance, and possibility. In celebrating a decade of dreams, his presence reminds us of the path that has been forged, and the future that continues to unfold.
