Founded in September 2016, Jazz Association (Singapore) is Singapore’s first charity dedicated to developing jazz education, artistic excellence and outreach, while promoting Singapore jazz globally.
Through its orchestras, scholarships, performances and community programmes, JASS brings the joy of jazz to people from all walks of life and helps Singapore grow as a leading global city of jazz.

A bold idea that learned to swing
JASS grew from the vision of Professor Jeremy Monteiro and fellow jazz advocates Albert Chiu, Edmund Lam and Susan Leong: to create a stronger ecosystem for musicians, audiences and the next generation.
A decade later, that shared belief connects professional artistry, youth development, music scholarships, outreach and support for musicians in times of crisis.

Ten years ago, a group of friends led by Jeremy Monteiro asked me to be the Patron of a new jazz charity. I said yes without hesitation. I have never regretted it. On its tenth anniversary, I want to make three points.
First, JASS has grown from a fledgling organisation into a well-established arts charity. It has a strong administrative team, and its creative direction is in the excellent hands of Jeremy Monteiro, Chok Kerong and Tan Weixiang. Good institutions are built by good people, and JASS has them.
Second, JASS has been a fine ambassador for Singapore. Our main orchestra, JASSO, has performed in the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Malaysia and Thailand, and at festivals in South Korea and Australia. This year, our youth orchestra JASSYO! toured Sabah to perform at the Sepilok Jazz Festival and mentored young jazz musicians aged 13 to 18. Music is one of Singapore's best instruments of friendship with the world.
Third, JASS invests in the future. Our scholarship programme has awarded 15 scholarships to 14 young jazz musicians, at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore and at the top jazz colleges in the United States. One of them, Sean Hong Wei, was supported twice—for his bachelor's degree and now his master's at The New School in New York—and today performs regularly with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band led by John Lee. Our investment is paying off.
I have challenged JASS to make Singapore a leading City of Jazz. On the evidence of its first decade, I am confident it will succeed. Please support JASS generously.

Prime Minister, Mr Lawrence Wong. Mr Heng Swee Keat, former Deputy Prime Minister, and Mrs Heng. Chairman, Dr Edmund Lam. Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Fundraising and Gala Committee, Mrs Susan Peh. Members of the Board and committees. Dear donors, partners and friends.
Prime Minister, thank you for taking time out of your very busy schedule to be with us tonight. It means a great deal to all of us at the Jazz Association (Singapore), or JASS, as we like to call it.
Tonight is a special night for us. Ten years. I have to say it twice to believe it. Ten years.
I still remember the four of us sitting around a table: Jeremy, Edmund, Susan and me. We were talking about starting a jazz orchestra, and a youth jazz orchestra, for Singapore. We had big dreams, and not very much else.
When our plans were ready, we went to see Professor Tommy Koh. We asked him to be our Patron. He said yes. And he gave us a goal we have carried ever since: to make Singapore a leading city of jazz. Back then, it sounded very ambitious. Tonight, I think it sounds a little less crazy.
Let me take you back a bit. In our first two years, JASSO played in Shanghai, in Borneo, and at the EFG London Jazz Festival. Then in 2018, we went to Reno, Nevada, and came home with an Outstanding Performance Award. I remember thinking, okay—maybe we are onto something.
Then came the pandemic. Like everyone else, we had to improvise. Luckily, jazz musicians are quite good at that. We went online. We started the JASS Crisis Fund to help musicians who had lost their income. We even did a virtual gala. I must say, it is much nicer to see all of you in person tonight.
Many of the seeds we planted in those early years have now grown. When we started the JASS Music Scholarship, we hoped to send one or two young musicians overseas. Today, we have given fifteen scholarships to fourteen scholars.
Our graduates are now back home, performing and teaching. And some are making their mark abroad. One of them, Maya Raisha, is doing her master's in New York. She has flown home to sing for you tonight.
The Lion City Jazz Festival is finding young talent every year. Our Spotlight Series gives young players a stage every month. And we are now helping musicians at every stage of their careers, not only the young ones.
And our orchestra is still travelling. Last year, JASSO played at the Jarasum Jazz Festival in Korea, to mark fifty years of friendship between Singapore and South Korea. And then at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, to mark sixty years of friendship between Singapore and Australia.
When our musicians go overseas, they carry our flag. And they carry something else too: the warmth of Singapore.
Because jazz is a conversation. Different people, different instruments, all listening to each other and making something together. That is not so different from what Singapore does best.
So we are not doing this to win prizes. We are doing it to serve. To do good. And to spread the joy of jazz, here at home and everywhere we go.
After ten years, JASS is steady and stable. Our team has grown. And they work very hard, often round the clock, especially before a gala.
I want to thank a few people.
Mr Heng, thank you for joining us once again. Your support has always meant a lot to us.
Our Patron, Professor Tommy Koh, cannot be with us tonight. But I know his heart is here. Professor Koh, thank you for the dream, and for walking with us every step of the way.
Jeremy, for his music and his energy. Ten years, and he has not slowed down one bit.
Edmund and the Board, for steering us so wisely.
And Susan. Susan is tireless. Every single detail tonight has passed through her hands. She makes sure everything is just right, so that all of us can simply enjoy a magical evening. Susan, and your wonderful Fundraising and Gala Committee, thank you.

And a special thank you to Mr Sean Wu. For the past four years, Sean served as our Treasurer, and he did it with great care and dedication. Sean, thank you so much.

Good evening, and a very warm welcome to each of you.
It is a special honour to have Prime Minister Lawrence Wong with us tonight as our Guest of Honour. Thank you, Prime Minister, for your presence and your support of the arts in Singapore. I also warmly welcome our Patron, Professor Tommy Koh, and our Honorary Chairman, Mr Albert Chiu. Your guidance has meant a great deal to JASS over the years.
This year marks ten years since JASS began. It is a good moment to look back, and an even better moment to look forward.
Our musicians have shown that Singapore jazz belongs on the world stage. JASSO performed at the Jarasum Jazz Festival in Korea, marking 50 years of ties between our two countries. We also performed at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, marking 60 years of friendship with Australia. Closer to home, our Lion City Jazz Festival grew to eleven programmes across concerts, education and outreach. Our youth orchestra, JASSYO!, shared the stage with jazz greats such as Randy Brecker and Ada Rovatti. These young musicians are Singapore's jazz future, and they are ready.
Our Music Scholarship continues to open doors. We have now supported twelve scholars since the programme began. This year's recipients, Maya Raisha and Justin Ng, are already making their mark, performing and growing alongside seasoned musicians.
We remain true to our belief that jazz belongs to everyone, not just to concert halls. This year, we brought live jazz to Queenstown, to the OCBC Square, and into schools through our Performing Arts-Based Learning programme. We saw families, students and first-time listeners discover jazz for themselves. That is exactly what we set out to do.
Looking ahead, we are launching the JASS Catalyst Fund, to give seed funding to new works and new ideas from our musicians. We are expanding our educational workshops, growing our regional presence with performances such as the Sepilok Jazz Festival, and commissioning new compositions from Singaporean composers. These commissions will carry our Asian-infused jazz heritage forward, for this generation and the next.
None of this happens without you. To our Guest of Honour, our Patron, our Honorary Chairman, our Board, our staff and our musicians: thank you for driving this mission forward, every single day.
And to everyone in this room tonight: your support makes our work possible. It turns programmes into performances, and performances into memories that last.
So tonight, let us celebrate ten years of jazz in Singapore. And let us look forward to many more.

“When we started JASS in 2016, we had big dreams. Ten years later, every note we play still carries that dream forward.”
When we started the Jazz Association (Singapore) in 2016, we had many dreams and ambitions, and no real certainty that any of them would come true. As we approach our tenth anniversary in September, I look back at hundreds of performances at home and overseas and feel that, for a relatively young arts company, we have accomplished a great deal.
During the financial year we stepped up our efforts in cultural diplomacy, performing at the Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and South Korea, and at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival to mark 60 years of relations between Singapore and Australia. Flying the Singapore flag through our music has been part of what we do from the start.
Closer to home, we have been increasing our shows in the communities, bringing the joy of jazz to people from all walks of life, including those who have been curious about jazz but never had the chance to encounter it.
In the coming year we will step up our work in the Performing Arts-Based Learning (PABL) programme jointly organised by the Ministry of Education and the National Arts Council, led for us by our Deputy Music Director and Head of Youth Development, Mr Tan Weixiang. We will also keep going out to the neighbourhoods under ArtsEverywhere@CDC.
Our Lion City Jazz Festival has grown from a one-week mentorship festival into a month-long one. The mentorship remains at its heart, but the festival now also sets out to give the Singapore jazz community at large a platform to perform on.
Our commissioning of original compositions and arrangements continues to grow, and our music library now holds a formidable collection of Singaporean and international works, vocal and instrumental, alongside the American songbook.
The company is in a good position because of our generous donors, and the National Arts Council and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, who have backed us tremendously through the Major Company Scheme grant and the Cultural Matching Fund. We have delivered on all our commitments and continue to do the projects we have committed to.
None of this happens on its own. Mr Chok Kerong has stepped up from Associate Music Director to Assistant Executive Director and Deputy Music Director, and as our presentations have grown he has been a tremendous help to me and to the organisation, contributing significantly in creative ideas and in senior management, which allows me to straddle my core duties with fundraising and donor relations. We have also engaged some of our scholars, including Assistant Music Director Mr Rit Xu, to work as music directors on an ad hoc basis for some presentations, under Kerong's supervision and mine.
Our General Manager, Mr Jonathan Foo, shows a high level of team management and true ownership across his many duties. Our admin team of Senior Manager Ms Cheryl Seet, Executive Assistant Manager Ms Doreen Eng and Manager Ms Kelly Kwan keeps the ship sailing at full steam ahead.
Senior Manager of Creative Services Mr Benny Goh has converted to a full-time position managing the orchestras, repertoire and other creative services, alongside his duties as resident trumpeter, which he carries out with increasing ability. Our Production and Technical Director, Mr Sunil Kumar, leads the production department and continues to work as FOH engineer on our major productions. We look forward to welcoming our incoming marketing manager and production manager.
We are growing slowly and steadily, and I am grateful to every member of the JASS team for the work they put in, much of it unseen.
My thanks to our Patron, Professor Tommy Koh, for his guidance and his advocacy of JASS since the very beginning. I am grateful too to our Honorary Chairman, Mr Albert Chiu, and our Chairman, Dr Edmund Lam, for their steady support, and to our Vice-Chairperson and Fundraising and Gala Chairperson, Mrs Susan Peh, who works tirelessly on our benefit galas. They are the toast of the town because of her vision, her meticulousness and her energetic and successful fundraising.
A word of particular thanks to our Treasurer, Mr Sean Wu, who ends his stipulated four-year term in August 2026, and who has been an attentive and supportive treasurer throughout. Our board is growing, and we look forward to welcoming Dr Euan Murugasu and Mr Wilbur Zou as new directors. My thanks also to my fellow board directors and to our committee members.
I want to thank our musicians as well—everyone who plays, writes and teaches for JASS. And to everyone who comes out to our shows and talks, and everyone who tunes in to our online presentations: you are the ones who give us the impetus to work hard at crafting every presentation we make.
We look forward to crossing our ten-year mark and beyond with optimism and joy, as we continue to spread the joy of jazz to Singaporeans, residents and visitors alike.

2016I’ve Got a Pocketful of Dreams
Jazz Association (Singapore) was registered with ACRA on 26 September 2016.
2017Now’s the Time
JASS became a registered charity on 24 March.
Maiden Voyage: JASSYO! made its inaugural appearance at the Lion City Youth Jazz Festival with jazz legend Benny Golson, while JASSO debuted at the 13th JZ Festival in Shanghai.
How High the Moon: The inaugural benefit gala, “Ella 100, Jazz Forever!”, welcomed Dr Vivian Balakrishnan as Guest of Honour and featured Carmen Bradford.
Count Your Blessings: The JASS Appreciation Award was introduced.
2018Milestones
JASS was conferred Institution of a Public Character status on 23 November, making donations eligible for a 250% tax deduction.
One Flight Up: The JASS Music Scholarship was established.
Weaver of Dreams: JASS collaborated with ART:DIS on an inclusive workshop series weaving students’ original poetry into musical arrangements.
2019Higher Ground
The JASS Ambassador Award was introduced to recognise supporters whose fundraising and advocacy went beyond the scope of the Appreciation Award.
2020Come Rain or Come Shine
The JASS Crisis Fund was created to support musicians affected by the economic uncertainty of the pandemic. It was renamed the JASS Support Fund in 2023.
2021Giant Steps
The National Arts Council recognised JASS as a Major Company.
Rasa Sayang: “Pesta Jazz—A Jazzy Celebration of Malay Songs” brought Ramli Sarip, Rahimah Rahim, Siti Nur Iman and Rudy Djoe to the Capitol Theatre.
2022Places and Spaces
JASS became an arts tenant at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.
State of Mind: “Swinging Through Our Emotions” debuted on World Mental Health Day.
With a Song in My Heart: Build Your Legacy Through Jazz was established, enabling donors to commission bespoke compositions and support new Singapore music.
2023Straight, No Chaser
JASS received participation acknowledgement at the Charity Transparency and Governance Awards, affirming its public accountability and governance practices.
Detour Ahead: Minister Edwin Tong presented JASS with the COVID-19 Resilience Certificate for its digital concerts and financial support for local jazz musicians.
2024The Connection
The Lion City Youth Jazz Festival became the Lion City Jazz Festival, expanding its mentorship model and pairing JASSYO! musicians with international masters from the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band.
Eastern Sounds: “Jazz It Up! 2024—A Jazzy Celebration of Chinese Songs” featured Teresa Carpio, Wysom Wong and Serene Koong.
2025Spread Your Wings
JASS advanced Singapore’s cultural diplomacy at the Thailand International Jazz Conference, Jarasum Jazz Festival and Melbourne International Jazz Festival, marking major bilateral anniversaries.
New Ground: The monthly JASS Spotlight Series began at The Jazz Loft @ Blu Jaz, championing outstanding young jazz talent.

Teresa Carpio
A Voice That Defines Generations
One of Asia’s most enduring vocalists, celebrated for her emotional depth, technical mastery and ability to connect across languages and generations.
For more than five decades, Teresa Carpio has remained one of Asia’s most respected vocalists, admired for technical excellence and an ability to communicate emotion with clarity, restraint and depth.
Born into a musical family and immersed in performance from an early age, she rose to prominence in the 1970s as Mandopop and Cantopop expanded across the region. Her sincerity and distinctive interpretive voice set her apart.
Across languages, genres, concert halls, television and international stages, Teresa has balanced versatility with an unmistakable identity. From intimate ballads to large-scale productions, she makes the story inside each song the centre of the performance.
Her influence reaches generations of Asian artists who regard her as a benchmark for vocal integrity and emotional authenticity. At the JASS Benefit Gala, her appearance celebrates an enduring artistry that continues to move and connect audiences.

A Guiding Star of Singapore Jazz
Singapore’s “King of Swing”—a pianist, composer, mentor and cultural force who helped place Singapore jazz on the international stage.
Cultural Medallion recipient Jeremy Monteiro has played a defining role in the growth and global recognition of Singapore jazz. Known as Singapore’s “King of Swing”, he is a pianist, pioneer, mentor and cultural force.
In 1988, he became the first Southeast Asian to lead a band of established international jazz musicians at the Montreux Jazz Festival, performing as Monteiro, Young & Holt and Friends. The appearance marked an important international milestone for both Jeremy and the region.
His playing is grounded in swing, expressive phrasing and deep respect for jazz tradition, while remaining open to reinvention. Whether he leads an orchestra, collaborates internationally or performs in an intimate setting, technique is matched by a palpable sense of joy.
As Executive Director of JASS, Jeremy has also helped nurture younger musicians and create platforms for them to learn, perform and grow, including JASSO and JASSYO!. His work joins performance, mentorship and community in service of Singapore jazz’s future.

JASS Music Scholar
Maya Raisha
A Rising Star of Singapore Jazz
A compelling new voice whose music moves effortlessly through jazz, soul, R&B, musical theatre and Brazilian influences.
Maya Raisha is a distinctive voice in Singapore’s new jazz vanguard. She received the JASS Music Scholarship in 2025 and was selected as one of Esplanade’s Next Wave Artists in 2024, earning a place in the Mosaic Jazz Fellows programme.
Raised in a musical household, Maya began classical piano and percussion at four. She moved into jazz at twelve and started performing professionally the following year, building on a strong classical foundation.
Singing in English, Malay and French, she brings jazz, soul, neo-soul, R&B and musical theatre into a fluid musical language, while continuing to expand her interest in Brazilian jazz.
Her performances have taken her from Marina Bay Sands to Carnegie Hall. As a JASS Music Scholar, Maya is pursuing a Master’s in Jazz Studies at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College in New York, where she has also performed with the Louis Armstrong House Big Band.
